The Greatest Gift
After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”
What did Abram fear most? He feared that perhaps the promises of the Lord may not be delivered. The Lord had promised him land, but he had not received. The Lord had promised that his children would be as numerous as the sand of the seashore, but Abram did not have a son and his wife Sara was barren.
But in a dream the Lord gave Abram assurance that He would be Abram’s shield, in other words his protection and strength. And God then stated that He Himself would be Abram’s reward. It was not merely land or a son that Abram was to value, but God Himself. To have God is the greatest of God’s gifts. So, Abram was receiving the greatest of all gifts and blessings. God Himself.
